I find it hard to keep blog writing going … I am aware that there are over 600 million blogs in the world right now and at least a million of them are travel blogs, so the thought is ‘why bother?’ Most bloggers are destined to be the Salieri to Mozart.
I wasn’t going to write about Armenia. It was the country I came to after my fight with diverticulitis which led to me spending three days in hospital and the need for recovery. I was definitely convalescing – so I thought I had little to write about, but one visit I did make was to the National Gallery of Armenia.
I didn’t lose my wallet on a bus in Penang so much as I lost the sense of ease I’d been carrying around for years. I’ve travelled long enough to believe that I was careful, observant and not the kind of person this happened to. When that belief went missing, it unsettled me far more than losing the cash or the cards could.
I was up at Midnight when I heard the shots being fired. I say shots – being British I am not that familiar with gunfire, but I know that guns are readily available in Georgia and it was enough to put the fear of God up me.
I have completed another twelve months of travel and as well as listing where I was, I wanted to look back on what stayed with me. These are moments that I didn’t record at the time. Sometimes because the moment was fleeting, sometimes out of respect for the people involved, sometimes because I just wasn’t there! What follows is a year told in words instead of photographs.
